Caribou Journal - 1991


March 28th and 29th, 1991 - entry by Pat
Arrived at 2am. Temp: 0. Brought the four-wheeler. Boppa wheeled all over the country. Visited Kermit and Howie (they weren't home). Drove right in with the Jeep. 4 wheel drive. The lake is frozen smooth and very noisy. Jeff says it sounds like fireworks in the distance. Doug says it sounds like thunder of heat lightening. He did "donuts" all over the ice.


Friday, May 10th, 1991 - entry by Pat
Arrived about 7pm. JoAnn, Jeff N., Jeff B. and Megan and I. Jo, Jeff N. and I started pulling the old steps down for burning while Jeff turned on the water. Our permit was for three days but it was too windy to start burning. Swarms of fish flies. Ate pizza, went to bed.

Saturday, May 11th, 1991 - entry by Pat
Jeff B. cleared the lake road with the crawler while the rest of us pulled out the old dock sections for burning. Jeff N. worked on removing two stumps on shore. Jeff B. brought the equipment down in the Jeep and pulled one stump out. We started working on putting in dock. Had to replace several boards. Water was very cold. Air was hot and humid. 80's. Went on a jeep ride looking for seedlings. Six thirty we started the fire. Did some back burning and had everything on the fire by 9:30pm. The old steps, dock sections, and old boat and Martin house. Also, Jeff cut down a dead birch. Ate dinner at 11pm.

Sunday, May 12th, 1991 - entry by Pat
Took a morning walk and checked on the fire. About 75 degrees and humid. No mosquitoes but wood ticks starting. Trees are first budding. Transplanted 30 red pine and white pine to area along the driveway.


Monday, June 3rd, 1991 - entry by Pat
Arrived about 5pm. Put the boat in on the old Jeep road. Skunk in garage...couldn't see but smell!

Tuesday, June 4th, 1991 - entry by Pat
Cleaned all the windows inside and out. Mowed the lawn and the driveway and the beach. Jeff trimmed around the small pines that we planted along the driveway. Water level below the culvert. Jeff started the boat and we rode around the lake.

Wednesday, June 5th, 1991 - entry by Pat
Sunny and 80. Took the half dead birch tree down hanging over the little cabin. One large branch hanging over the cabin fell on the chimmney and took out 2 shingles. The main part of the tree got hung up on another birch and we had to take them both down. Fixed the roof and put on facia board. Went fishing to Duck Lake. They were biting!! Kept six good ones took them home and fried them for dinner. Meagan was up all night with itchy ears.

Thursday, June 6th, 1991 - entry by Pat
Jeff dug the holes for the overhang supports while I cleaned the bathroom. He poured footings. We took the Jeep to town to get more quickcrete and propane. We stopped at forestry office and got a burning permit. Went to gravel pit and stole stones for footings. Jeff finished pouring. Megan eating grass and throwing up like crazy - she couldn't even keep water down. She is sick.

Sunny 80s. Jeff replaced all of the bad boards on the dock and added one more section to make 3. While he did that I started taking apart the boat house. We started burning at 7pm. Jeff took down several small dead trees and we burned those also. We finished at 11pm and ate dinner at midnight.

Partly cloudy and 80s. Jeff went fishing in the AM. It was so windy that it was difficult to fish. I painted the fascia on the little cabin and he started the posts for the overhang. Jeff finished the posts at 4pm. We went to town for cigars and pizza. After dinner we went in the boat to T'man's for a visit. Megan is better but not 100%.

Cloudy and humid. Jeff tried to fix toilet drip - Had the wrong part. We took Meagan on a short walk. Jeff went fishing. Packed up.


Friday, June 21st, 1991 - entry by Pat
Arrived 8am. Jeff fixed toilet. Found a dead bat on the porch. Had to start a fire in the wood stove as the temp reached mid 40s.

Saturday, June 22, 1991 - entry by Pat
Sunny and 75. I stripped, sanded and scraped the 2 chairs from the boat house. Repainted white and yellow. (It took all day) Jeff fixed three lights. Jeff put in the boat. Windy again. He also put up a shelf in the closet. Went fishing about 5:30pm. At Duck Lake we ran into Bob Cook, Donna, Jeff and Amy Blake. They had their limit. We only kept four. One of which was around 2.5-3 pounds (largemouth bass).

Arrived around 8pm. Had a tree on road. Sat on the deck and enjoyed the weather. We ate pizza and went to bed.

Saturday, July 13th, 1991 - entry by Pat
Sunny and 80. I washed and waxed the kitchen floor while Jeff fixed the lawn mower and mowed the lawn. We then mowed the beach and I mowed the driveway while Jeff cut the downed tree and disposed of the brush. About 4pm we went for a swim. Went for a Jeep ride to south road. Went into Jack Lake.

Sunny and 80. Jeff went fishing in morning. We cleared (again) the old road to gate. Several trees down. Also put a new lock on the old gate. Went down to the lake and Jeff washed the rowboat inside and out.


Friday, August 2nd 1991 - entry by Pat
Arrived 8:30pm. Front door was wide open and the closet window was broken. They didn't seem to have taken anything. Sue, Norm, Annie and Steve arrived about ten minutes after we did. Cleaned up the glass.

Rained all day. We went to Grand Rapids to the school house, etc. After dinner we made a camp fire and roasted marshmallows and told scary stories.

Sunny and 75. Swam and sat in the sun while Norm and Jeff reviewed the cabin wiring.

Arrived 8:30pm. Unpacked and ate dinner.

Saturday, August 24th, 1991 - entry by Pat
Cloudy, 75, and humid. Took a morning walk and checked the newly planted trees. Lost about five of them (out of thirty). Jeff put a new shower head in the shower then he fixed the broken window. Started rewiring the cabin. Put a junction box in the attic. Put in 2-20 amp circuits. Pulled a new wire above the sink. I cleaned out drawers and the closet.

Sunny, 85, and humid. Pulled new wires for the porch. Put in two new outlets and a junction box. Fixed the outlet on the porch. Will finish next week.

Arrived 2:15am (Saturday). JoAnn and Jeff N. arrived about 9pm and opened up.

Partly cloudy and 75. Jeff and Jeff N. fixed Jeff N's headlight and battery cable. Mowed down by the lake and put the boat in. Tom, Joan, and their friends Charlie and Bill (and Woody) came over for an afternoon of water skiing, etc.

Sunny, 80, and windy. Went for a walk in am and mowed by the road. Jeff worked on electrical while I split wood. JoAnn and Jeff N. cleaned up the shoreline with nippers. They also dug out the hump and filled it in with sand which completed the phase I of "Beach Restoration". Meg got stung down at the beach. Jeff learned how to drive the Jeep. Jeff N. finished the fish puzzle during the Viking game. JoAnn and Jeff N. cooked excellent stir fry and wantons. Played "Taboo" and fell asleep.

Monday, September 2nd, 1991 (Labor Day) - entry by Pat
Jeff finished rewiring the cabin and JoAnn and Jeff N. went swimming and took a boat ride.

70, cloudy and windy. Arrived about 12:15 (with Jack). Moved the old wood stove down to the garage. Moved the "new" wood stove into place. Took about nine hours. The old stove was very heavy.

50, cloudy, very windy. Took a morning walk with the dogs. Jeff dug up to sewer to see what had to be done.

Arrived about 9pm. Unpacked the car and started the fire and the gas heaters.

Partly cloudy, 50 and windy. Rearranged the closet. Put the boat in.

Cleaned up the trundle bed frame and assembled. Went to gravel pit and got a load of gravel.

Sunny, 50 and windy. Painted the trim. Painted the ceiling of porch. Put a new propane tank on. Sonny Huju stopped with P. Said there were more break-ins.

Tuesday, October 1st, 1991 - entry by Pat
Partly cloudy, 50. Rained afternoon. Covered the old drywell. Dug the new drywell on the east side of the cabin (new location). Buried a 40 gallon drum with two 10 foot leech fields. Lots of roots and a huge rock at about 5 feet deep.

Cleaned the shed and reorganized so that we could fit the excess furniture etc. Straightened the garage so that the four wheeler will fit. Gathered up a load for the dump. Had a visitor about 4:45 - orange VW beetle license number 798-FWE. Went to town (Marcell). Jeff bought a small game license and we called JoAnn and Nana.

Thursday, October 3rd, 1991 - entry by Pat
Sunny and 60. Went to Grand Rapids and dump. Jeff bought connectors for gas hose. Went to Glens Army Surplus, L&M, Manney's, Taco John's, and antique shop and the grocery store. Arrived home about 5pm. Jeff went hunting and when he got home he put stove black on the wood stove.

Friday, October 4th, 1991 - entry by Pat
Sunny and 40s. Jeff tightened up and reinforced the boat bracket on the Jeep. We went grouse hunting on the south road. Jeff got one about a mile in. Megan scared up a clump of about 6 but Jeff's lens fell out of his glasses and he couldn't shoot. JoAnn and Jeff N. arrived about 9pm. Steve, Pat, Elizabeth and Ted arrived about 9:30pm.

Rain/sleet and 30s. We all went to town shopping. Antique shops, etc. Got back home about 4pm. Had happy hour, shot BB gun and cans, ate dinner and had a marshmallow roat in the rain.

Elizabeth, Jeff and Steve went fishing to Duck Lake while Pat, Ted, JoAnn, Jeff N., Megan and I went for a long walk to the gravel pit and around the snowmobile trail. They only caught two bass. Jeff drained the water.


Friday, November 15th, 1991 - entry by Pat
30s and clear. Arrived about 8pm. Unpacked the car and started the woodstove and the wall heater. Check the break in damage in the garage and shed. Went down to the lake and filled up two containers of water.

Saturday, November 16th, 1991 - entry by Pat
20s and clear. Went to Marcel to call the Sheriff's Department. Took a walk and looked for a Christmas tree. Jeff wired the fixture above the stove and I made kindling wood. Deputy came about 5:30.

Sunday, November 17th, 1991 - entry by Pat
Cut two Christmas trees and tied them on the Jeep. Fixed the lock on garage and shed. Packed up. Left about 3:30.
