History

This used to be the "running page", but it's not just about running any longer.

I started jogging in May of 1996 (when I began working in Seattle). Before then, I never really jogged. My first run was down to Shaky's Pizza and back to get a menu. That was one mile, and I was exhausted.

Late in the summer of 1996, my neighbor suggested I try a 5K. In the summer of 1998, I ran my first half-marathon. I ran my first marathon in the fall of 1999. In July, 2002, I did my frist triathalon.

Many of the races I run, along with a lot of information regarding Minnesota running, can be found at Raceberry Jam. Also, Runner's World is a great source of information for anyone interested in running. Midwest Events is a good page for local multi-sport events.

type of "running high"

Strangely, I ran into this same

for the bathroom at the triathlon.

Slowed down a lot since Luke and Jake were born on December 18th/19th of 2002. I didn't run for about 2.5 months. Started running again in mid-March on the weekends with "The Organ".

Further confirming my belief that multi-sport events are where its at, and also further convincing me that if I'm going to keep doing these I need something other than a mountain bike.  The wind really affected me on the bike portion. I held my place from the start in the first run, lost about 20 positions in the bike, and gained 4 positions back in the second run.  Finished 85th out of 185 overall, 71st out of 116 men, and 24th out of 37 in my age group (male 30-39). Full results. (Bought a road bike the next week, BTW)

2002

This year started off very strong.  I got back into running in August of 2001 after a long layoff and have been going fairly strong (and smart) since then.  Did my first triathalon in July.

Race Date Distance Time Notes
Twin Cities Marathon 10 Mile - Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN Sunday, 9/29/02 10 miles 1:15:12 Felt great throughout. This route seemed mostly uphill! Finished 326th overall (out of 3,547), 255 of all men (out of 1,450), and 45th in the 30-34 male age group (out of 256). James Page Blubber Run - Minneapolis, MN Saturday, 9/21/02 5K N/A After the second sampling of Pale Ale before the race, I decided this would be a fun run. My friends Don and Paul and I ran together for the entire race and took it fairly leisurely:. We stopped halfway to drink more beer, and then had even more after the finish.
Bovey Farmers Day 5K - Bovey, MN Saturday, 8/31/02 5K 21:07 Bovey is a hilly town!  Saw this race in the paper the day before while at the cabin and decided to go do it.  Finished 7th overall and 1st in my age group. (30-39). Full results.
Woodbury Days 5K - Woodbury, MN Sunday, 8/26/02 5K 20:46 Best time ever in this race, and best 5K finish I've had since May, 2002 (4 years and 3 months ago).  That has me pumped. I finished 19th overall (out of 285) and 2nd in my age group (out of 13). I missed finishing 1st in my age group by 1 second...the guy passed me just before the finish line. Full results.

2001

Got off to a great start this year, but started slacking in mid-April. Got back into it at the beginning of August.

Race Date Distance Time Notes
Bear Tracks 5K - White Bear Lake, MN Saturday, 11/10/01 5K 21:14 Great day, and my best 5K in over 2 years. Full results.
Run for the Apples 5 miler - White Bear Lake, MN Saturday, 10/20/01 5 miles 37:55 Yet another perfect day for a race. This was cross country and the hardest race I can remember since the marathon. The course was pretty hilly. Went back to a race name for this one: Chandler Bing. Finished 62nd out of 429 finishers. Full results.
Woodbury Country Mile - Woodbury, MN Sunday, 8/26/01 5K 21:50 Another perfect day for a race.  Continuing to improve. Finished 34th out of 379 runners, 4th in my age group (30-34). Much better than I expected. Full results.
Lions' Huff 'n' Puff 5K - Lake Elmo, MN Saturday, 8/11/01 5K 22:57 Perfect day for a race.  Getting in better shape. Looking forward to Woodbury Days. Finished 24th overall out of 98 finishers. Full results.
Great Grove Get Together - Cottage Grove, MN Saturday, 6/16/01 5K 23:25 Great day for it.  I'm out of shape.
Great Grove Get Together - Cottage Grove, MN Saturday, 6/16/01 1 mile 7:06 Took it a little easy due to the 5K.

2000

My goal going into this year was a 19:30 5K. Ran into two problems this year: lack of motivation and lack of health.

I took it easy for two months after the marathon and got back on a serious program at the beginning of December. I was doing awesome (set a personal record in the Winter Carnival 5K on February 5th) until coming down with a virus in mid-February.  My doctor told me to take it easy for a few weeks, and that killed my motivation. I finally started to get serious again in late May, but I was basically starting over.

In June, I came down with strep throat and wasn't able to kick it until mid-August when I came down with a bad cold.  This summer sucked. My throat problem continued throughout the year...turned out to be acid related.  Went on Prilosec and kicked irritating foods (mints, coffee, etc.) for 3 months and it was all better.

Race Date Distance Time Notes
Woodbury Country Mile - Woodbury, MN Sunday, 8/27/00 5K 26:00 Took it really easy until the last 1/4 mile.
Great Grove Get Together - Cottage Grove Saturday, 6/3/00 5K 22:21 Slowest 5K in a long time, but I've only been doing about 10 miles a week lately. Starting to get back into it now.
Great Grove Get Together - Cottage Grove Saturday, 6/3/00 1 mile 7:51 Now, I know I wasn't in top shape for this one, but 7:51 for a mile?  I expected about 6:30.

I was relieved when the coordinator admitted that is was closer to 1.25 miles and apologized for not telling us that in advance. 7:51 for 1.25 miles would've been around a 6:17 mile, which is about what I expected.

St. Paul Winter Carnival Frozen 5K - St. Paul Saturday, 2/5/00 5K 21:15 Fastest I've run this race. 10:24 first half, 10:51 second half

1999

With prodding from a few friends, decided to run a marathon this year. Intentionally ran fewer races than the previous year.
Race Date Distance Time Notes
Twin Cities Marathon - Minneapolis/St. Paul Sunday, 10/03/99 26.2 miles 4:10:38 Disappointing time, but hey...I ran a freakin' marathon! See my 1999 Twin Cities Marathon Play-by-Play.
Woodbury Country Mile - Woodbury Sunday, 8/29/99 13.1 miles 1:34:29 Personal course record. Over three minutes faster than the previous year. Slowed at about the same spot. Sore hamstrings was the limiting factor.
Lumberjack Days 5 miler - Cloquet Saturday, 7/17/99 5 miles 33:56 Personal record for a five-miler. Placed 5th overall and 2nd in my age group (30-39). Gave up the concept of race names.
Lakewood Hills Trail 5K - White Bear Lake Saturday, 7/10/99 5K - Cross Country 20:51 Personal course record, although the course was changed slightly from the previous year. Ran a negative split for the first time ever. Finished 8th overall, 1st in my age group (30-39) and first finisher over 19 years old. Race name: Larry Tate.
Run for the Roses - Roseville Saturday, 6/26/99 5K 21:23 Pretty hot day. This has to be the toughest 5K. I hate this run. Race name: Reuben Kincaid (which showed in the paper as Kincaid Reuben).
Great Grove Get Together - Cottage Grove Sunday, 6/6/99 2 miles 12:52 Same course as last year, but more runners. I ran 20 seconds faster than the previous year. Placed 5th overall, and 1st in my age group (20-29). Race name: Reuben Kincaid.
Strive Scholarship 5K - White Bear Lake Saturday, 4/10/99 5K 21:21 Pretty satisfied with my time, considering two factors: I had to take a week off from the flu two weeks prior, and it was hella-windy. First race where I used a race name: Reuben Kincaid.
St. Paul Winter Carnival Frozen 5K - St. Paul Saturday, 2/6/99 at 10:30am 5K 21:38 Fastest I've done this race (1 minute faster than last year).

1998

First real serious year of running. Set a goal of running 1000 miles during the year (silly goal, but I accomplished it). Made great strides in my times (no pun intended). Also set a goal of a 20-minute 5K, which I accomplished on May 16th.
Race Date Distance Time Notes
Twin Cities Marathon 5K - St. Paul 10/3/98 - 9:00am 5K 20:10 Second fastest 5K to date. Finished 4th in the 25-29 age group, and finished 34th out of 1139 runners.
VALS Run 5K - Minneapolis 9/26/98 - 9:00am 5K 21:40 No energy after the first mile.
Pine Tree Apple Orchard 5K - White Bear Lake 9/19/98 - 8:00am 5K - Cross country 21:48 1st in the 20-29 age group, and 7th overall. Ate 6 lobsters in the preceding week.
Woodbury Country Mile - Woodbury 8/30/98 13.1 miles 1:37:45 I beat my goal of 1:40:00. Yay!
Highland Fest River Run - St. Paul 8/15/98 10K 42:42 Two minutes faster than last week! It was a perfect day for running.
Lions Huff and Puff 10K - Lake Elmo 8/8/98 - 9:00am 10K (6.21 miles) 44:38 A little slower than my goal of 44 minutes, but oh well. Longest race yet. Didn't feel too bad after this one!
Rivertown Days Run - Hastings 7/18/98 8K (4.97 miles) 35:00 So, the bad thing about running down a big hill is that you have to run back up...
3M Miner's Run - Maplewood 7/16/98 5K 20:22 Great race conditions.
Lakewood Hills 5K - White Bear Lake 7/11/98 5K - Cross Country 23:50 Egads! Cross country is a wee bit harder than road racing. What a humbling experience... Got first in my age group, and 6th overall (out of about 30 people). My friend Mr. Organ got first in his age group also.
Run for the Roses 5K - Roseville 6/27/98 5K 21:05 Hot, humid, and the hilliest race I've run this year. Blech.
Star of the North Games 5K - Brooklyn Park 6/21/98 5K 20:03 Fastest official 5K to date (the Southeast YMCA wasn't certified...) First mile time was 6:04. Second and third miles were about 6:38 each.
Great Grove Get Together - Cottage Grove 6/13/98 5 miles 35:45 This was 20 minutes after the 2 miler (listed just above in this table). Placed 2nd overall and first in my age category (20-29).
Great Grove Get Together - Cottage Grove 6/13/98 2 miles (2.2 miles actual) 13:13 Placed second overall and first in my age category (20-29). This was supposed to be two miles, but the guy in charge admitted that he measured it twice and it turned out to be closer to 2.2 miles.
Apple Blossom Races 5K - Hastings 5/17/98 5K 20:40 Hilly! Ran the first mile in 6:07, but the second mile was a bit steeper and it slowed me down. Full results.
Southeast Area YMCA 5K 5/16/98 5K 19:59 Finished 2nd overall. Best time to date. First time under 20 minutes. Hilly and very windy course.
Melpemome 5K - St. Paul 5/2/98 5K 20:31 Best time to date.
Strive Scholarship 5K - White Bear Lake 4/11/98 5K 21:13 Best time to date. Placed third in the 20-29 age group and got a ribbon.
St. Paul Winter Carnival Frozen 5K 2/7/98 5K 22:50 Much better than I expected to do! About 20 degrees (F) outside.

1997

I was a bit more serious in 1997, but I had a hard time staying on a program (as the notes for each race indicate).
Race Date Distance Time Notes
Woodbury Country Mile 8/24/97 5K 22:05 Finished 5th in the 25-29 age group. Fastest 5K yet. Needed to be 30 seconds faster to get third. A lot of people in this race! Very hilly course.
Highland Fest 5K Run - St. Paul 8/9/97 5K 23:48 Not as much training before this one as I would have liked.
Run for The Roses 5K - Roseville 6/28/97 5K 24:20 Again, hadn't run for a while.
St. Paul Winter Carnival Frozen 5K 2/1/97 5K 24:22 Hadn't run for a while.

1996

1996 was the first year I started running, and I didn't take it very seriously. It was more of a way to get a little exercise in before I joined a gym in Seattle.
Race Date Distance Time Notes
621 Foundation Family Fun Run 9/29/96 5K 22:38 Finished 3rd in the 20-29 age group. Got a little trophy.
Woodbury Country Mile 8/25/96 5K (3.106 miles) 24:20 First real race. Did much better than I expected.
